7 Steps to  a safer Internet.

Set Google to use strict filtering (this will stop most inappropriate images and text from showing up in your results)

Install Mcaffe's free SiteAdvisor (this is a great tool to warn you of potentially dangerous web sites)

Install a good blocking\monitoring program. Spector Pro is one of the best and is reasonably priced.

Install virus protection a few good ones are Mcaffe, Norton's or Trend Micro (my choice)

Use the parents\child Internet contract to setup rules and guidelines.

Install Spybot Search & Destroy this is a free utility that will help with spyware removal and detection.  (link below)

Be aware, review the logs, checkup on your child's social networking site regularly.
For many of you the term monitoring\blocking can sound negative, i.e. you may think your invading your kids privacy etc. When your kids are posting information on Myspace, is that private? if your child being naive clicks on a link that brings them to an inappropriate site, but software you installed blocked that site, is that  "invading there privacy"? -From "parents wakeup" TheParentsEdge.com
Do NOT let your child have a computer in their bedroom. Place your computer in an open room with the monitor facing out. This allows you to quickly see what is occurring on the internet.
Do not allow a webcam to be used unsupervised. A webcam makes it very easy for your children to post pictures of themselves.
Do NOT let your kids post their address, phone number, school etc. Teach them to Avoid giving out ANY personal information online.
Do NOT let your child spend hours at a time online. Set limits on internet usage.
Do setup rules and guidelines for your kids. TheParentsEdge.com has a parent child internet contract that works well..
Do install monitoring software
Do install virus protection software.
Do setup individual user accounts, if possible. Have a parents login and a kids login with restrictions on the kids login
Monitor your kids and review their site and logs regularly.
Rules for safe surfing..
