Kids online today are, for the most part, much more computer literate then their parents are. This leaves many parents in the dark about Internet safety and what to do about it. I hope to change that and show parents in an easy step by step process how to make things a little safer for their kids online.

I am going to cover a simple yet very effective step any parent can do on their computer to create a safer environment for their family *note: I am assuming parents have already talked with and covered Internet safety rules with their kids.

One thing every kid will do on the Internet is search. Searching is how they will get their homework questions answered, find new songs, research new products, find new layouts for their MySpace site etc. If your kids are using a search engine that is not configured to use strict filtering, then it can and will return very inappropriate text and images. Luckily, setting up strict filtering is very easy and usually requires only a few clicks of your mouse.

So, Lets get started setting up a search engine that filters out inappropriate text and images. I will focus on the Google search engine in this article. However, Yahoo, AOL,MSN also have very similar features.

Go to www.google.com

- To the right of the input box by word Google click on the word preferences.
- This opens up a new window “Global preferences”.
- About half way down the page there is a section called safe search filtering. Underneath that click on the line that says: Use strict filtering (Filter both explicit text and explicit images)
- Now, very important, at he bottom right corner of the window, click on save preferences.

You’re done. This process is very effective at stopping most all inappropriate images and text from showing up in your kids search results. *Note; you may want to check on this setting from time to time, it can be turned off just as easy.

There are many programs out their, Net nanny, cybersitter and Spector Pro among others. TheParentsEdge recommends Spector Pro. The others work well also, the important thing is to download one, install it and start using it today.

Monitoring your kids online Internet safety
Software with an Advanced Warning System
In addition to monitoring and recording, Spector Pro has an advanced warning system that will inform you when a PC being monitored has been used in an inappropriate manner. Through the use of keywords and phrases that you specify, Spector Pro will be "on alert", emailing you an immediate and detailed report of when, where and how a keyword was used - every time it is typed or appears on the PC, on a web site, in a chat/instant message or in an email. Alerts are sent to your office, home, cell phone or wherever you want.
